Idn for .EU domains now

You can now register .eu domain names with other characters than a-z and 0-9. See the allowed characters below. A 1 year registration of a .eu idn domain has a cost of Eur 50. Characters allowed for idn domains for .EU

It is important to understand that characters from different scripts/alphabets cannot be mixed. Domains must use characters from a single (1) script only. For instance you cannot mix ó from Latin with έ from the Greek alphabet. The list of characters supported can be found at Eurid.

Denmark´s largest company MÆRSK register their correctly spelled .eu domain, as well the Spanish número uno in telecommunications can register telefónica.eu. If your brand name, company or keywords contain other characters than a-z or 0-9 then this could be important for your brand protection.

Christopher Hofman Laursen from European Domain Centre explains "It´s a huge disadvantage that there is no trademark protection period for companies with trademarks including other characters than a to z. This means that telefónica.eu can end up with somebody else than Spain´s biggest telecommunications provider. Surely they can recover the domain legally, but why all the hassles? That said, idn for .eu domains will be an important opportunity for companies, organisations and cities with other characters than a-z in their name. There are so many idn introductions these years that Internet users will use idn domains as short cuts in the future. I can only recommend that companies are first movers on these domains.
