What are top level domains
There are two different kinds of top-level domains: country code and generic. Country code domains indicate a country origin (.fr (France), .jp (Japan) etc.). Generic domains are non-country specific : .com (commercial), .net (network), .org (organizations) etc.
Local keyword domains to improve your Google ranking - how to get web traffic with local country domains
(12/05/2009 2:24 pm)There is no doubt that a company´s most important marketing tool today is the web site. To be found on the search engines is therefore more crucial than ever, and each trick (within the rules!) counts in order to be found. There are several factors influencing the search engine ranking (meta tags, title tags, links building, age of primary domain, keywords in text etc.). However another value adding factor is keyword domains.
Keywords are generic terms describing a product, service or other search words. For several years domainers have focussed on buying up any .com variation possible in the hope of striking gold - and many have struck gold via the web traffic obtained. More than 80 million .com are active today. Local top level domains like .de, co.uk and .cn have also been very popular with domainers. Low cost, no regulation and lots of traffic are always good arguments for securing local keyword domains.
Fortunately there are still local top level domains, which are regulated and has a higher cost, which have held back the domainers from entering the playing field. And this is where your company can benefit getting more relevant potential customer traffic to your web site.
Sites with local top level domains as the URL are perceived as relevant by the search engine bots. For instance a .nl domain is gaining more ranking points in the Dutch Google than a .de.
To give you an example; 50% of the top 20 Danish companies are in the local Google no. 1 search result with their corporate .dk domain. Their .com address is normally just below. This is not to say that .dk is stronger than .com in the Danish Google, but it shows that the local domain has relevance in the ranking.
Now, lets put on the domainers´ glasses for a moment. If you are a company in the UK producing sliding doors then slidingdoors.co.uk and sliding-doors.co.uk are fantastic domains. There were 201.000 seaches in April in Google for the phrase "sliding doors". The company is also exporting to the Czech Republic. Sliding doors is posuvné dve?e in Czech. There were 6.600 searches in the local Czech Google in April. Not bad if a couple of them could become customers.
Have a look at the local keywords used to search for your service/product. This can be done via Google´s keyword tool. Insert the keywords of your business and see how popular these search terms are. You can select a specific language and country to see local search words. In order to translate words you can use Google translate tool.
If you have a Google Adwords campaign running then use Analytics to see the search terms which your users have used to find web site. You can even see, which serious leads you have received via the search words, but that´s another story.
Action plan for keyword domains
1. Analyze the users´ search terms in the local countries, and select the most relevant
2. Check if the domains are available and secure the most important
3. Create specific landing pages which are keyword optimized and relevant for the user. The first step is to convert the user from pro search word to pro your company. See more about landing pages
There is no reason why a potential client should not find you instead of your competitors or any domainer´s Adsense programme, so profit now before someone else will focus on this opportunity.
